Secure your home for a worry-free vacation
Whether you are traveling for a week or you are relocating somewhere warm for the winter, use the checklist below to help in properly securing your home before you leave.
- Inform a trusted neighbour about your trip and ask them to check on your home regularly
- If you'll be away in the winter or for a long period, check with your insurance broker about any requirements on your home insurance policy
- Talk to your local post office about mail holding or forwarding services
- Suspend or cancel newspaper and magazine subscriptions
- Ask a neighbour to park a car in your driveway whenever possible
- Arrange to have your driveway cleared of snow regularly

- Use timers to intermittently activate lights, television sets or the radio while you are away
- Ensure that all entry points are secure, including delivery chutes, garage doors and basement windows
- Install a motion-sensing exterior light at your front and back doors
- Store jewellery, important documents and heirlooms in a safety deposit box
- Turn off and unplug all appliances and household electronics
