Winter driving safety tips
Long, winter drives can be unpredictable.
Don't get left out in the cold…
-
Always double-check weather conditions
before you leave.
-
Consider purchasing a recent map of the
area you are travelling to
-
Take a cell phone with you and make sure
you charge it the night before your trip
-
Clear all snow and ice from your
windows
-
Give yourself some extra time so that you
are not tempted to speed to make it to your destination
at a certain time
-
Always keep your gas tank at least
half-full
-
If you don't have them already,
invest in a good set of winter tires
|
|
You should also invest in a winter survival kit.
Leave it in your car at all times. A good
starter kit includes:
-
A first-aid kit, drinking water and
non-perishable foods such as energy bars or nuts
-
A shovel, a bag of sand and a tow rope or
chain
-
Ice scraper, snow brush and extra
windshield washer antifreeze
-
Warm clothes, blankets and a flashlight
with extra batteries
-
Booster cables and flares or warning
reflectors
To keep your car in peak condition, you
should also visit a service centre or garage regularly
and commit to doing your own checks on a regular basis
(lights, windows, tire pressure).
